Routine blood cell parameter forecasts survival after stroke

Red cell distribution width may be a useful predictor of survival in patients with stroke, an analysis of NHANES suggests. (Source: MedWire News - Stroke) (original story)

Creating new pathways in damaged brains.

Design and rationale of current-oasis 7: a randomized, 2 x 2 factorial trial evaluating optimal dosing strategies for clopidogrel and aspirin in patients with st and non-st-elevation acute coronary syndromes managed with an early invasive strategy.

CONCLUSIONS: The CURRENT-OASIS 7 trial will help to define optimal dosing regimens for clopidogrel and ASA in patients with ST and non-ST-segment-elevation ACS treated with an early invasive strategy. Middle cerebral artery branch occlusion mimicking a saccular aneurysm on 3d digital subtraction angiography.

Middle cerebral artery branch occlusion mimicking a saccular aneurysm on 3D digital subtraction angiography. J Neurosurg. 2008 Dec;109(6):1123-5 Authors: Pearl MS, Tamargo R, Gailloud P The angiographic appearance of an intracranial arterial occlusion is typically distinct from that of a saccular aneurysm, with only a few reported cases of occlusion simulating aneurysm. At the same time, a small percentage of symptomatic intracranial aneurysms present with a stroke. Accurate diagnosis of these conditions is crucial, as their treatment differs. The authors report on a case of middle... (original story)

Trends in presenting characteristics and hospital mortality among patients with st elevation and non-st elevation myocardial infarction in the national registry of myocardial infarction from 1990 to 2006.

CONCLUSIONS: This large, observational database from 1990 to 2006 shows increasing prevalence of NSTEMI and, despite higher risk profile on presentation, falling risk-adjusted hospital mortality in patients with either STEMI or NSTEMI. PMID: 19032996 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: American Heart Journal) (original story)

Evaluation of carotid artery atherosclerotic plaque distribution by using long-axis high-resolution black-blood magnetic resonance imaging.

Conclusions Long-axis BB-MR imaging can provide a noninvasive and accurate way to show CA plaque distribution; it is of great use not only for stroke risk assessment in patients with CA atherosclerosis but also for preoperative evaluation in patients requiring CA endarterectomy or CA stent placement. Intracerebral bullet embolism: a rare cause of ischemic stroke.

Clipping of very large or giant unruptured intracranial aneurysms in the anterior circulation: an outcome study.

Conclusions The treatment of very large or giant unruptured intracranial aneurysms is hazardous and complex and thus best performed only at major cerebrovascular centers with an experienced team of neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, neurologists, and neuroanesthesiologists. Surgery, with acceptable risks and excellent occlusion rates, is typically the treatment of choice in patients younger than 50 years of age. In older patients, the benefits of endovascular treatment versus surgery versus no treatment must be carefully weighed individually. Minimizing temporary occlusion and th... (original story)

Population-based data sources for chronic disease surveillance.

This study estimated agreement between population-based administrative and survey data for ascertaining cases of arthritis, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke. Chronic disease case definitions that varied by data source, number of years and number of diagnosis or prescription drug codes were constructed from Manitoba's administrative data. These data were linked to the Canadian Community Health Survey. Agreement between the two data sources, estimated by the kappa coefficient, was calculated for each case definition, and differences were tested. Socio-demographic and como... (original story)

Depression and cognitions after stroke: validation of the stroke cognitions questionnaire revised (scqr).

Conclusions. The SCQR is a reliable and valid measure of cognitions relevant to stroke patients. The pattern of cognitions was similar to that found in primary depression (more negative and less positive cognitions), suggesting that therapies developed from the cognitive model of depression may be appropriate for stroke patients. PMID: 19031206 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation) (original story)

Automated measurement of proprioception following stroke.

Conclusion. The system provides a reliable quantitative measure of upper limb proprioception, offering considerable advantage over the traditional means applied in the clinic. PMID: 19037777 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation) (original story)

Anxiety and depression in the first six months after stroke. a longitudinal multicentre study.

Conclusions. Despite differences in patient profiles and intensity of rehabilitation, no significant differences occurred between centres in prevalence and severity of both disorders. Anxiety was almost as common as depression and additional patients became anxious/depressed at each time point. PMID: 19037779 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation) (original story)

Stroke surveillance in manitoba, canada: estimates from administrative databases.

This study investigated the use of population-based administrative databases for stroke surveillance. First, a meta-analysis was conducted of four studies, identified via a PubMed search, which estimated the sensitivity and specificity of hospital data for ascertaining cases of stroke when clinical registries or medical charts were the gold standard. Subsequently, case-ascertainment algorithms based on hospital, physician and prescription drug records were developed and applied to Manitoba's administrative data, and prevalence estimates were obtained for fiscal years 1995/96 to 2003/04 by age ... How binge drinking may drive heart disease

As the holidays arrive, a group of researchers has identified the precise mechanisms by which binge drinking contributes to clogs in arteries that lead to heart attack and stroke. The works adds to a growing body of evidence that drinking patterns matter as much, if not more, to risk for cardiovascular disease than the total amount consumed. Irregular, heavy drinking pattern clogs blood vessels. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines) (original story)
